Men Are at Higher Risk for Addiction

What can I do about addiction as a man? If you're a man struggling with addiction, you should know that you're not alone. In fact, men have a higher chance of getting addicted than women do. People might think that men can handle addiction better, because, after all, men's bodies often handle alcohol better than women's bodies. They can usually drink more because of size and body composition. But the truth is that men are more at-risk for addiction than women are. One recent study has found that the way that men typically handle emotions puts them at greater risk for addiction, and another study has found that men's brains also react in different ways to alcoholism. Men's Addiction: Related to Handling of Emotions?

Have you ever thought about how men handle emotions? The ways that they typically deal with their feelings puts them at greater risk for addiction, according to a new study. Because many men push their emotions outward, they often take expression through acts of substance abuse or addiction. "The study of more than 43,000 adults looked at the prevalence of different types of mental illness by gender. The researchers report in the Journal of Abnormal Psychology that men are more likely to externalize emotions, which leads to behavior that is aggressive, impulsive, noncompliant and coercive." Men Also at Higher Risk for Alcoholism

But in addition to general addiction, men also react in different ways to alcohol-which goes along with the higher rates of alcoholism for men. A new study done by Boston University has found that the ways in which women's and men's brains react to alcoholism is different. The study primarily focused on recovering alcoholics, and found that women recovered brain white matter more quickly than men, but that men eventually had better white matter recovery rates. In fact, it took almost a year for the men to show any progress in recovering their white matter.
