Alcoholism in Germany Rises by Over 33%
Do you drink frequently? Do you find yourself struggling to control your drinking? Do you ever end up drinking more than you planned to? Does your drinking ever interfere with your life? Is your job or career affected by your drinking? Do you ever wonder if maybe you might be an alcoholic? Alcoholism is a serious addiction that can cause people to do things they normally wouldn't, in addition to the long-term debilitating health effects that can decrease your quality of life or even lead to life-threatening conditions. That's why it's so important to get the right treatment, and why alcoholism is such a serious problem. And it's getting more serious. In Germany, a new study has found that the percentage of the population that are alcoholics grew by more than 36% since 2006, seeing the most growth in young people.
The new study shows that now 1.8 million people in Germany are alcoholics, up from around 1.3 million in 2006. In addition to the people who actually qualify as alcoholics, there are another 1.6 million people who drink frequently. In the whole country in all, there are 7.4 million people who drink more than the recommended amount. "The high prevalence of mental disorders caused by alcohol and tobacco makes the urgency of implementing effective preventive measures clear,” said the authors of the study.
