College Drug Addiction: How to Beat It
Did you ever use drugs when you were younger, say, in college? Do you think you ever put yourself or others in danger through drug usage? How much a part of college life is tied up in drugs and partying? The college years are often seen as a time for students to begin experimenting with drugs, learning their limits and finding out how much they can handle. But the amount of drug usage on college campuses indicates an appalling epidemic of drug addiction among young people. It's even a problem in small liberal-arts colleges, which don’t really have a reputation for being a party school at all. Click here to learn about recent trends in teen drug use.
Colleges Struggling to Handle Students’ Drug Addiction
College drug addiction can be a huge problem for all students. It’s linked not only with health problems, but also to acts like violence, rape and date rape, and self-harm. And that's not all-the sooner someone begins using drugs, the more likely they are to develop addiction in later life. "Substance use and abuse is an issue at all colleges and universities, and we're really working hard to educate students around those issues" said the Dean of Students at Curry College, a small college strugglling with its students’ drug addiction problems.
Molly: One of the Drugs of Choice for College Students
And when college students turn to drugs, often the drug of choice is “Molly.” Molly can be hard for college students to resist, considering the effects of peer pressure. "This is going to change everybody," said a drug-initiative coordinator for the Attorney General's office to a meeting of teenagers. "You're going to be challenged, not only now, but when you go to college, when you go to school, when you go to parties." But it's important to remember that Molly is very dangerous. "When combined with alcohol, it's danger, danger, danger," he added. "It's horrible what you'll go through."
