Kidnappers of 14 Year-Old Girl Demand Drugs
In a horrifying turn of events, a recent case of kidnapping in Georgia involved a 14-year-old girl abducted by captors who demanded drugs and money in exchange for the girl's safe return. The girl's family received several calls from a blocked number after she had been abducted at gunpoint from the family's home. Luckily the girl was returned alive and safe, in good health, to a relative's house not long after being kidnapped. She had been held for more than 24 hours. Two suspects have been taken into custody and charged with federal charges of conspiracy to kidnap.
Though this shocking story may seem to be out of the ordinary, the fact is that nobody knows what people will do under the influence of drugs. Whether it's alcohol, cocaine, PCP, Molly, meth, heroin, prescription pills, or even marijuana, drugs do alter people's behavior. And these men sound pretty desperate, to demand drugs in exchange for returning the girl they kidnapped. People who are addicted to drugs will do almost anything to score their next fix-including, in this case, kidnapping an innocent young girl. It's simply amazing that she was returned in good health so quickly.
In a case like this, it's helpful to remember that drug addiction is a disease, just like a mental health illness or cancer. And though the men have been charged with criminal offenses, if they were acting under the influence of addiction then they need to get treatment. Countless research studies have shown that the most effective way to kick the habit is to get the right program of treatment.
