And that's a legitimate fear: there is a large proportion of the prison population that have been jailed for non-violent drug offenses. In a news story that proves that dealing drugs doesn't pay, two police raids in Newark, NJ led to 8 arrests, large amounts of drugs, and thousands of dollars in cash.

Officers raided two residential houses in Newark last week. In the first one, they confiscated 82 envelopes of what they suspected to be heroin, 8 grams of crack cocaine, 28 Xanax pills, 60 Oxycodone pills, and various other drug paraphernalia and supplies. In addition, they arrested three people and confiscated over $1,000 in cash. At the second house, police officers found a loaded .45-caliber handgun, in addition to 15 packets of heroin and 38 vials of power cocaine. In all, 8 people were arrested, facing criminal drug possession and intent to distribute charges.
