Doctor Writes Illegal Prescriptions at Starbucks
Have you ever bought illegal drugs? Have you ever bought misused prescription medication? Who do you imagine fits the stereotype of a drug dealer? Some dirty guy or lowlife who pushes drugs on the street or out of a dingy drug house? What about a licensed doctor? In an unusual news story to come out of Orange County, California, a licensed doctor began seeing his patients inside a Starbucks. With no office, he would diagnose and treat them, all at the popular coffee shop during the evenings. But if that were the end of the story, it would just be a harmless eccentricity. But this doctor went further-too far. He was also writing prescriptions for addictive medication from his "practice" inside the Starbucks.
The doctor defended his actions by saying, "It is pretty much the American dream to be your own boss. Unfortunately, it's the dream that turned into a nightmare." By trying to raise the funds to start his own private practice-which is an expensive proposition, especially in Orange County-he eventually turned to pain management to get enough money. Though he claims he tried to weed out the junkies, an undercover DEA agent was able to walk away from a meeting with him with a prescription for 60 OxyContin, 60 Xanax, and 120 Roxicodone.
Prescription drug abuse is a huge problem in this country, and growing fast. It's much more dangerous than the abuse of illegal drugs. Three quarters of all drug overdose deaths involve prescription pills. But the good news is that you can break free from addiction.
