Driver in Deadly Car Accident Still in Rehab

Nearly two months after a high-speed car accident in Merchantville that killed a mother and her teenage daughter and critically injured a passenger, the driver responsible for the crash is still in a rehab facility recovering from serious injuries. He is awaiting indictment from officials on charges that he was high on PCP at the time of the fatal accident. Toxicology results showed the drug, which the National Institute on Drug Abuse has labeled “dissociative,” was present in his system causing a distortion of sight, sound and tactile function. Those associated with the case expect the charges to include two counts of vehicular manslaughter and one count of aggravated assault, but the Camden County Prosecutor noted it may take time for the indictments to come through.

The deadly accident originally occurred on January 31 when the driver sped at 100 miles per hour into oncoming traffic at a circle near the Cherry Hill/Merchantville border with a 25 mile per hour posted speed limit. The Dodge Durango collided head-on with a minivan and the momentum of the vehicle pushed the crash almost two blocks down the road on Chapel Avenue. Both cars were mangled and the driver of the minivan was killed instantly along with her daughter, an 18 year old senior at Cherry Hill High School West. The family had just recently moved to Cherry Hill and the teenager wrote in the school newspaper The Lion’s Roar about the opportunities she was given as a result.
