Christina Huffington Discusses the Darkness of Cocaine Addiction

The stigma of drug addiction is deeply ingrained to the conscience of society. Many believe that drug addicts are deadbeats, come from a history of abuse or neglect, and generally are unable to function as a normal member of the community. While some aspects of this stereotype apply to some individuals, the truth is that drug addiction can touch anyone. This is the message that Christina Huffington emphasized during her time on The Today Show this morning as she recounted her experience with cocaine addiction.

The 24 year old daughter of Huffington post founder Arianna Huffington and Congressman Michael Huffington said that her cocaine addiction started when she was only sixteen years old, when she did her first line after a friend showed up at her house with the drug. The first, most incredible high was one that she spent the next seven years chasing to replicate the experience. From that point on, Christina and her friends would go to the mall to buy cocaine and snort lines at home without their parents’ knowledge. After a housekeeper found the drugs in her room, Arianna started taking her daughter to get drug tested several times per month and the addiction seemed to stop there.

Christina was admitted to Yale University, and it was there that she fell of the wagon when she saw other students doing cocaine in the dorm. She described the experience as complete unglamorous, spending days alone in her room doing drugs. She says now that her addiction nearly killed her, and when her heart started racing uncontrollably she called her mother and checked herself into a rehab program.

In her interview on the Today show, and in an article she wrote for Glamour magazine, Christina warned that addiction can happen to anyone – even financially privileged children with happy and healthy family lives.
