ADHD Drug-Related Emergency Room Visits Quadruple
New data released by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) has demonstrated that Adderall, Ritalin, and various other ADHD drugs were responsible for almost 23,000 young adult visits to the emergency room. These statistics were based on national data, and were regarding 2011, the latest year for which data is available. The most frightening part is that this is almost a fourfold increase from 2005, in which only 5,600 visits to the emergency room by young adults using Ritalin or Adderall were reported.
Though the numbers focused on the 18-34 age group, the report also indicated that the largest increase came in the 18-25 age bracket. This astonishing increase reflects the growing popularity of ADHD drugs being used as stimulants by young people, often in order to fuel long parties. The report also included caffeine pills and energy drinks among the numbers. And approximately 30 percent of the emergency room visits involved the usage of alcohol along with the stimulants-a common tactic among young people trying to keep the party going.
Even more alarming was the way in which the 18-25 age group got the drugs. Over 50 percent of them got the pills from a friend or relative for no charge, and another 17 percent paid money for them from an acquaintance. And it's not just buying them illegally, either. Number show that the rate of prescriptions for ADHD drugs has risen 39 percent between 2007 and 2011. And 14,000 prescriptions each month were new prescriptions in 2011, showing a huge increase.
Though it can be tempting to turn to stimulants to revive flagging energy, people should know that these pills can have severe consequences-especially when combined with alcohol.
