It seems like the daily news is full of stories about celebrities admitting themselves to rehab for drug and alcohol abuse. Ozzy Osbourne recently announced that he completed a program earlier this year, and TV show Glee’s Cory Monteith successfully finished his program this past week. While it’s important for these celebrities to enter rehab if they have a problem, unfortunately rehab services are not as accessible as they could be.
According to a study by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, rehab treatment can cost anywhere from $1,400 for a one month outpatient program to a whopping $30,000 for high end inpatient services in the same time frame. Even lower end residential treatment programs can still cost $4,ooo per month which is still an expense that the average American cannot afford. Many times patients are turned away because their health insurance does not cover rehab services, or only covers a small portion.
Beginning in 2014, provisions in Obamacare (formally known as the Healthcare for America Plan) will dictate that up to 5 million people will have newly established access to substance abuse treatment services. The newly covered population will include homeless people and individuals who fill the gap between ability to pay and eligibility for substance abuse treatment under their insurance plan. Currently only 10 percent of the 23 million drug and alcohol addicts in the United States receive treatment of some kind.
While an eligibility increase of 5 million people is a good start, it does not solve the whole problem in this country. In addition, hospitals, clinics and rehabilitation centers will likely struggle to keep up with the surge of newly eligible individuals seeking substance abuse treatment. Regardless of the downfalls, the effect of Obamacare on accessibility to substance abuse treatment is a welcome change and a necessary step in the right direction.
