12 Step Program for Alcoholism Recovery: Step 12

Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to other addicts, and to practice these principles in all our affairs.

In recognition of Alcohol Awareness Month, Retreat at Lancaster County will be providing tips on alcoholism recovery and prevention throughout the month of April.

If you have successfully completed the Alcoholics Anonymous 12 Step Program to this point, it is time to share yourself with others and be of service to those in need. You have been in the shoes of someone whose life spiraled out of control under the grip of alcoholism. You have experienced first hand what it means to hit rock bottom and live through it. You understand the importance of self awareness, relationship building and spiritual and emotional health.

Share the message of this program with other alcoholics who have not yet found their way to sobriety. Show empathy with what they are going through – it is easy to forget the struggles but remember that you were once in their position. Offer them support when they are ready to take it, but do not enable their addiction. You can practice the principles of the program by educating other alcoholics and encouraging them to take your path, but remember that you cannot force them to take the first step.

You have worked hard to find yourself in a place where your life is in control and you are emotionally and spiritually balanced. Remember to keep the steps at the fore front of your daily life and continue the cycle of recovery. You are sober, but you will always be an alcoholic. Do not make the mistake of thinking you are stronger than your addiction. If you feel weak, turn to your higher power as a means of support and a way to regain control over your addiction.
